Trudy is set to host a live event with horticultural specialists in a bid to encourage more people to explore a career in the industry.
Today, Trudy joined a live Q&A session with specialist National Trust gardeners to celebrate this year’s National Gardeners Week, the country’s biggest annual celebration of gardening.
Trudy was keen to learn more about how people can get involved with a career in horticulture and will be hosting a virtual horticultural chat show on her Facebook page on Friday 21st May with local industry experts.
This year’s National Gardening Week theme aims to highlight the scientific links between gardening and wellbeing and encourages people to soak up a daily dose of Vitamin ‘Green’.
Trudy said: “Nature and the outdoors is incredibly important for our mental health with research showing that getting out into our gardens for a daily dose of sunshine and fresh air helps to improve our personal wellbeing.
“During the pandemic our gardens have acted as not only a space to enjoy meeting with friends and family, but also as a haven to escape lockdown restrictions and helped to create a new generation of gardening enthusiasts.
“I was pleased to join the National Trust today to learn about how we can encourage more people to utilise their green spaces and even make a career out of it. Please join me on Friday 21st May to find out more about great gardens to visit, courses, jobs and to hear inspiring tales of mid-life career changes, apprenticeship experiences and floristry groups near you.”
Earlier this week, Trudy welcomed the Minister for Tourism and Sport to the Lingholm Estate in Portniscale, renowned for its Hartley Botanical Greenhouse and walled garden, the inspiration behind Beatrix Potter’s Mr McGregor’s Garden in the Tale of Peter Rabbit.
Within the walled garden, which is free to visit, is an outside gallery dedicated to her work in the Derwentwater area, much of it undertaken whilst she stayed at Lingholm.
The visit was led by Cumbria Tourism in recognition of step 2 of the reopening roadmap and provided a platform to talk about the county’s response to coronavirus.
Trudy added: “Copeland has a number of stunning walks and gardens to visit, including and Muncaster Castle, Giggle Alley in Eskdale and the Walled Garden at the Lingholm Estate which I was pleased to visit with the Tourism Minister this week.”
