Education Secretary Gavin Williamson joined Trudy Harrison at Whitehaven Academy today to see how £20million Government investment would help transform the school.
They spoke with headteacher Nigel Youngman and chief executive of Cumbria Education Trust Lorrayne Hughes. They then had a tour of the school, meeting with staff and had a question and answer session with students.
The Secretary of State for Education said: "It was a brilliant opportunity to come to Whitehaven and see the vision for this new Academy and see how the multi-million pound investment will benefit the school and the community. It was also great to meet the students who were very positive about the new team in charge and who are now part of a bright new future. Trudy was not afraid to speak out in Westminster to help secure this investment, and Copeland needs someone like this."
Trudy, Copeland's Conservative Prospective Parliamentary candidate, said: "It was good to be able to show Gavin where the investment is being spent and for him to see how needed it is for this school, its teachers, students and the community. Along with parents and community activists, we fought for this investment and now there is a new vision and energy going forward in this exciting new chapter."
The Academy will include 21 classrooms, seven science labs and two art studios when it is due to open in 2021.
