Trudy has today been given an assurance that Government will meet with ‘all and any’ potential investors in Moorside.
Speaking in oral questions to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Greg Clark MP, Mrs Harrison questioned what steps are being taken to secure the future of nuclear power in the UK.
The Secretary of State said nuclear power ‘has an important part to play in our energy systems as part of a low- carbon technology’.
He added that the Government’s commitment to new nuclear is ‘clearly evident in the form of Hinkley Point C’ as well as in the launch of the Nuclear Sector Deal in June.
Mrs Harrison, continued: “It is really assuring to me to understand the Government’s commitment to new nuclear.
“But, with Toshiba’s recent wind down of NuGen, can the Secretary of State assure me that he will meet with all and any developer who is interested in building their reactors at Moorside in Copeland?”
In response to Mrs Harrison’s question, the Secretary of State replied: “I can indeed give that assurance to my honourable friend who is a great champion of skills and innovation in the nuclear sector industry in the country.
“The circumstances behind Toshiba’s wind down of NuGen are well known. It was because of the move into Chapter 11 bankruptcy of their subsidiary, but that site is now available for other investors.”
Today Mrs Harrison, will meet with Richard Harrington MP to continue discussions around the future of the £20 billion nuclear new build.
It follows a series of meetings with CGN’s Chief Operating Officer, Robert Davies, the state backed firm responsible for much of China’s expansion in nuclear reactors.
