Trudy has taken on a new position as a local charity’s ‘Phoenix Role Model’ aiming to raise young people’s aspirations.
This evening, Mrs Harrison met with young people and volunteers at the Phoenix Youth Project in Cleator Moor to enrol as a one of the charity’s ‘role models’ which aims to provide the centre’s young people with an inspirational figure to look up to.
Helping to make a difference to youngsters aged between eight and 19, the main aim of the Phoenix Youth Project is to raise aspirations, develop positive behaviour, encourage healthy lifestyles and reduce crime, discriminatory and anti-social behaviour.
Mrs Harrison, said: “I had such fun at Phoenix Youth Centre, the team do a brilliant job. The Centre is so much more than a warm and welcoming environment, they provide advice, organise trips and work on projects in the town.
“It’s tough being a teenager, with so many different emotions, changes and decisions to make, so sometimes it feels overwhelming, hopefully I can be there for someone when they need that little bit of support, I really do commend the Phoenix Role Model scheme and would encourage others to give their time and experience too.”
The award-winning charity project was laughed in 2007 in Cleator Moor, and now provides youth work services to over 500 young people in Cleator Moor, Frizington and Moor Row every year.
The project has also established a Rewards for Actions programme which encourages the area’s young people to make a positive impact in the local community and take ownership of their personal development.
Joanne Pears, Lead Youth Development Worker, said: “The young people we're honoured that our MP came to visit their youth club. She got stuck into all the activities of the session including Karaoke and life is a balloon game.
“She answered questions from the young people about what being an MP was all about and talked to individuals about their C.V.'s and interview techniques. Thank you for taking the time to visit our youth club.”
Phoenix Youth Project runs weekly Youth Work Session's at each of the three centres based in Frizington, Moor Row and Cleator Moor.
