Trudy Harrison has praised the area’s farming industry following a meeting with local farmers and members of Cumbria NFU.
Trudy visited Monk Moss Farm in Millom to meet with local farmers and Cumbria NFU representatives as part of the MP’s programme to visit the area’s farming, food and drink businesses over the autumn.
With Brexit remaining a major talking point among the farming community, the meeting was an opportunity to discuss the UK’s export potential, as well as local issues, including flooding and river maintenance.
Trudy Harrison MP, said: “It was great to visit Monk Moss Farm, speaking with farmers and NFU representatives about the UK's export potential.
“As a farmer's granddaughter, I know just how hard our farming community work to produce the best food and drink, with the highest animal standards in the world. Our countryside has been landscaped by farming over hundreds of years; it's what 18 million visitors to the Lake District enjoy annually, and what we perhaps take for granted.”
The meeting comes following the launch of the NFU’s Back British Farming campaign last month.
The campaign is designed to build support for the British food and farming sector through simple actions like buying British produce, enjoying the countryside responsibly, and spreading the word with friends and family.
Mrs Harrison, added: “Overall, farming contributes £109 billion to the national economy and employs around 3.8 million people, which is why, as the Government goes through the Brexit negotiation process and the development of a new domestic agricultural policy, support for British farming is more important than ever.”
Cumbria NFU County Adviser, Mike Sanderson, said, "It was really good to see Trudy and it was a worthwhile meeting. Trudy obviously realises the importance of agriculture to her constituency and has committed, going forward, to get her teeth into it. We look forward to working with her."
