Trudy has enjoyed a visit to a blooming Copeland business that has been in the same family for generations.
Trudy visited Blomfields Ltd, located at Woodlands Nurseries, Lowca, which cultivates bedding plants across 16 acres of glasshouses on the vast site.
Blomfields supplies its bedding plants to shops and garden centres in the county and across the UK, and provides local displays and hanging baskets, including those found in Workington town centre and Cockermouth. Selling approximately 30 million plants a year, its most popular plants are pansies, violas and begonias.
The business was formed on its present site in 1948 by Gilbert Blomfield, whose son Robin and now grandson Anthony Blomfield have taken on the running of the operation, employing 51 members of staff at peak season.
Trudy said: “I was so impressed by Anthony, Robin and the team at Blomfields. It’s an extremely successful business model, exemplified by their expansion over recent years.
“It’s clear that Anthony and the staff take tremendous care and pride in their work, and employ the latest techniques and technology to keep their business at the cutting edge.”
Anthony Blomfield said: “It was a pleasure to show Trudy around our nursery and to tell her more about our business; it’s clear she is knowledgeable and passionate about horticulture.
“It was also a great opportunity to chat with Trudy about the issues and challenges a business like ours is facing currently, and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her.”
