Trudy has praised the “can-do spirit” of a village’s residents following the transformation of a 100-year-old community centre.
The Borrowdale Institute in Rosthwaite, in the centre of the Borrowdale Valley, has undergone an extensive renovation into a modern multi-purpose community hub.
The three-year project cost £380,000 – of which £80,000 was donated directly by the local community – and it culminated in a formal opening event to tie in with its centenary celebrations on Wednesday, hosted by Malcolm Stonestreet, Chairman of the Institute, and attended by guests including Trudy and David Beeby, High Sheriff of Cumbria.
Trudy said: “It is wonderful to see the striking transformation of this historic venue. From hosting family celebrations, special occasions, meetings and much-needed social and cultural togetherness, this is a true hub that will meet the needs of the community for years to come.
“One of my favourite qualities is a ‘can-do’ attitude from people who know their own community best. This community has driven this project to success and enormous credit goes to all involved.”
From previously being underused and in need of improvement, the centre now boasts a new community room, function room, kitchen/bar and the Herdwick Suite conference/meeting space, set against the stunning backdrop of Castle Crag.
Mr Stonestreet said: “I am thankful for a wonderful group of trustees driving forward the project, and an incredibly supportive village community for their generosity and backing. We are pleased that the Institute will be an asset for the local and farming community as somewhere to gather, socialise and enjoy.”
Mr Beeby added: “The redevelopment of the Borrowdale Institute is a fabulous example of people coming together to achieve something very special for this peaceful and beautiful valley. I congratulate Malcolm Stonestreet, the trustees and the funding team for taking forward this 100-year institution into the future.”
