In oral questions to the Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero Claire Coutinho MP, and the Minister for Nuclear Andrew Bowie MP, Trudy asked if they agreed that best location for two 470 MW Rolls-Royce small modular reactors is next to Sellafield.
Minster for Nuclear, Andrew Bowie MP commend Trudy for being a great champion for Nuclear and expressed his enjoyment about his recent visit to Sellafield to see the fantastic work being done. Minister Bowie stated that as already set out the Government aims to deploy up to 24 GW of nuclear energy by 2050, and the Government remains open to all available technologies that will deliver nuclear energy. Minister Bowie said that the Government are developing a new national policy statement that will provide the planning framework for new nuclear power beyond 2025. The Government are consulting on a proposed way forward for determining how new nuclear developments might be located.
This week Trudy also met with Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero Claire Coutinho MP, to urge forthcoming nuclear decisions for the area and to discuss her recent success at COP28 UAE, where 24 countries all agreed to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
Trudy also sought assurance that the cyber security at Sellafield Ltd is safe, secure and free from any successful state or non state attacks.
Trudy took the opportunity to invite Claire to West Cumbria to meet the wider nuclear workforce and to see for herself why we are the UK’s centre for nuclear excellence.
