'With Brexit on the horizon, it’s time to make significant investments in Agriculture’, says Trudy Harrison
Speaking in the second reading of the Agricultural Bill which aims to establish a new framework for agriculture following the UK's withdrawal from the EU and the Common Agricultural Policy, Trudy Harrison MP urged Government to ‘Back British Farming’.
Speaking in the debate, Mrs Harrison, said: “This bill is a once in a generation opportunity to form our own, bespoke, agricultural policy, allowing us to cater, not to the needs of the maize producers of Poland and the Citrus growers of Catalonia, but to the farmers of Cumbria, Caithness and Cornwall.
“This is our chance to tailor legislation to the needs of British Farmers and maximise their businesses.
“It is key that we ensure that our agriculture sector is agile, diverse and efficient in an ever globalised economy.”
The new legislation follows an extensive consultation exercise centred on the Government's Command Paper, Health and Harmony: the future for food, farming and the environment in a Green Brexit.
The paper seeks to provide an 'agricultural transition' from the current system of direct payments to farmers based principally on land holdings, to one of paying public money for public goods.
