Two Cumbrian MPs are celebrating the news that improvements are to be made to an ‘infamous bottleneck’ road following their joint campaign effort.
Today, the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling announced that plans are moving forward to upgrade the ‘bottleneck’ at Grizebeck which currently runs through a farm yard, a welcome announcement for Copeland MP Trudy Harrison and Barrow-in Furness MP, John Woodcock.
Since being elected, Mrs Harrison has worked closely with Mr Woodcock to press for urgent action on the main road.
During last year’s snap general election campaign, Mrs Harrison personally drove the Transport Minister to see first-hand the issues drivers face on a daily basis.
Mrs Harrison, said: “At last, Chris Grayling, the Transport Secretary announces that the ‘farm yard’ or what will now become the Grizeback bypass has the support of Government.
“This will make thousands of daily commutes between Barrow and my Copeland constituency more bearable. When I moved to Bootle over 15 years ago, and ventured to Barrow on that road for the first time, I just couldn’t believe it was the main road to Barrow.
“This is a great example of two MPs working together, putting politics away and focusing on progress for Cumbria.
“Since being elected I have urged Chris Grayling to take this section of road seriously - and today he has done just that.”
Writing for The Mail Last year, Mr Grayling made a firm commitment to improving the road stating the A595 as ‘top of my roads priority list, not least because Trudy Harrison is holding me to it. I fully expect a compelling case to be made for a bypass at Grizebeck.’
Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference this morning, Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling said: “We are moving ahead with plans to upgrade what we call the Major Road Network. The next tier down of roads which plays such an important part in good regional connections.
“Today I am able to announce the details of the first schemes in that programme which will now start in development.
“The infamous farm yard bottle neck, literally a main road through a farm yard, Grizebeck bypass near Barrow-In-Furness.”
Mrs Harrison, added: “This is good news for business, good news for locals, visitors, learners, investors. The collaboration potential between Barrow and West Cumbria will be increased and thousands will be celebrating this announcement, and
“I’ll work with John Woodcock to ensure its swift delivery.”
