Cumbrian MPs given tour of NNL Central Laboratory

Two Cumbrian MPs have visited the National Nuclear Laboratory for a tour of its flagship research unit.

Trudy Harrison MP was joined by Carlisle’s MP, John Stevenson for a meeting with National Nuclear Laboratory bosses at the Sellafield site in Seascale.

Both MPs were also taken on a tour of the Central Laboratory, before meeting with staff and apprentices.

The visit comes just weeks after Mrs Harrison welcomed NNL to showcase their apprenticeships and training opportunities at the Copeland Skills Fair.

Mrs Harrison, said: "I was fascinated to learn about the skills and cutting edge technologies being pioneered in our community, and to meet staff, including apprentices who told me all about their work.

NNL’s Central Laboratory is set to become the world’s most advanced nuclear research facility, and is collaborating with NASA and other highly advanced global institutions.

Mrs Harrison, added: “The research and development being carried out at NNL was incredibly inspiring, the visit reinforced my belief in the area's potential to truly lead the industrial strategy.”

NNL is the second biggest industrial employer in West Cumbria with over six hundred staff at facilities in Workington and at Sellafield, including Central Windscale Laboratories.

Adrian Bull, Director of Stakeholder Relations, said: “We were delighted to welcome Trudy and John to our Central Laboratory on the Sellafield site, to discuss the work we do both locally in Cumbria and more widely, as well as a number of important topical issues in the nuclear sector. We look forward to following up those valuable conversations over the coming weeks.”
